Recently, I’ve been blessed with more opportunities to attend red carpet events as a journalist for PEOPLE Magazine. Interviewing well-known names in the entertainment industry – as well as the great men and women behind the scenes of film and television – it has definitely been an amazing experience. Standing next to journalists/broadcasters from publications and news channels that I’ve grown up watching is a testament to God’s direction in my life.
However, you may be surprised to hear that red carpets and interviews don’t come naturally to me, and I don’t really get excited about them. In the winter, it’s freezing to be standing outside, and the excitement that comes with seeing a celebrity for the first time gets old very quickly, as they really are just human beings like everyone else.
Despite this, working on the red carpet has helped me grow in the work I need to do as a journalist. Although I’d much rather be indoors, warm, and comfortable, being able to prepare and attend these events has given me more confidence in covering red carpets. I’m no longer as nervous before interviews, and I’ve been able to increase my portfolio with the number of interviews I’ve carried out.
All of this wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t say yes to the new opportunities that God brought my way. In facing the discomfort of the cold in the winter and the mundane process of the press check-in and waiting for the celebrity guests to arrive, I’ve been able to grow in my work.
So if there’s anything to take from this blog, it’s that sometimes you have to leave the comfort zone to see growth.
Joshua 1:9 says: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” I held onto this verse when I felt nervous about carrying out interviews on the red carpet, and I can absolutely say God was with me. He’s also with you too.
