Social media should not make you compare your life to another

Social media. It’s kind of a love-hate relationship for me lol. I love how you’re able to see little snippets of what your friends and loved ones are up to, see funny content and post things you want to post. However, I hate the way it causes a rise of insecurity and low self-esteem, due to people comparing their lives to others.

It’s been said many times that, ‘social media is a highlight reel of people’s lives.’ Most people tend to post the fun events in their lives or the better angles of themselves because let’s face it … who wants to show themselves looking gross on The ‘Gram? However, issues arise when people now compare their realities to these highlight reels.

I think when we learn to stop comparing our lives to others and instead appreciate who we are and where we are in life, there will be a more healthier use of social media.

If that means taking a break from social media for as long as you need or even stopping the use of social media completely to focus on you, then so be it. A post on social media should never make you feel less adequate or insecure and if it does, then maybe you shouldn’t be using it.

Everyone goes through stuff-challenges, battles, sad times. Just because they may not post their issues or they appear to be ‘living their best life’ on Insta, does not mean they don’t have problems, just like you.

Therefore, it’s important to not take social media so seriously as it’s a virtual world, not the real world.
